The Lichen Collection
Lichen can be found growing in most of the terrestrial world. They are organisms that emerged from a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi; the algae living among the filaments of the fungi. 400,000,000 or so years ago algae and fungi became plant pioneers that moved from the ancient oceans onto land; a pivotal move in adding oxygen to the earths atmosphere at the time. Under a magnifying glass or a microscope, the structures, filaments and growth patterns are fascinating and strange, familiar yet not, and profoundly beautiful.
